Happy spring! After a long winter, spring has finally arrived. Spring is an exciting season of the year. It focuses on the power of rebirth, renewal, growth, and hope, both physically and spiritually. Now is the time to break free from winter’s hold and help your plans move in a positive and effective direction.
In Five Element Acupuncture, spring is connected with the Wood Element. Wood manages both the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians in the body. The Liver meridian oversees planning in your life, while the Gall Bladder oversees your decision-making. That’s why they are each called “Officials”.
The Liver is often referred to as “The Official in charge of planning”. The Liver functions according to a very well-designed plan. The Liver organ is responsible for many metabolic processes in the body. It is often referred to as the “laboratory” of the body. The Liver is where your body processes hormones and toxins. It transforms both to help manage important body functions, activate metabolism, and cleanse the body. For example, the Liver meridian manages much of a woman’s menstrual cycle, including its frequency and flow.
Emotionally, the Liver Official balances personality and behavior. When life does not go to plan, a healthy Liver Official accepts it and adjusts. If the Liver Official becomes imbalanced, you feel tense, frustrated, irritable, resentful, or angry when things don’t go your way. On a spiritual level, the Liver Official gives you wisdom and vision for a more positive future. If the Liver Official is not balanced properly, you may feel pessimistic, hopeless, and fall into depression.
The Gall Bladder Official is called the Decision Maker. This Official is responsible for all the decisions you make on every level – body, mind, and spirit. The Gall Bladder meridian is where the vital Qi energy flows for your eyes, temples, head, shoulders, sides, hips, knees, and feet. If the Gall Bladder meridian is out of balance, you may experience eye problems, one-sided headaches, and pain or inflammation in all those areas.
When you keep the Gall Bladder meridian balanced, it helps you become more decisive and make smarter choices. If you are hesitant or indecisive, you may make snap decisions without thinking it through. When the Gall Bladder meridian is out of balance it can cause anger, the emotion most associated with the Gall Bladder Official.
Spiritually, the Gall Bladder Official is like a Wise Judge. It helps you live with integrity, decisiveness, kindness, and honesty. As a wise judge, you do not harbor prejudice. Instead, you access your inner wisdom and intuition.
Your ability to make good plans and healthy decisions comes down to the health of your Liver and Gall Bladder meridians. Five Element Acupuncture treatments balance these meridians to support all the functions of these vital organs. The best time of year to balance the Liver and Gall Bladder is during the spring.
I recommend that all my patients come in during this critical time to do a “Spring Cleaning”. Just like your regular car tune-ups, when you tune up your meridians your vital Qi energy flows in a way to improve everything in your life.
