Be Like Water, My Friend: The Water Element in Acupuncture

In Five Element Acupuncture, the Water element, Shui, is one of the five fundamental elements that influence the balance and harmony within the body and mind.
In the Five Element system, the Water element is associated with the kidneys and bladder organs. These organs play an important role in the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”), the vital energy, throughout the body. This qi controls our bodies and our minds. Stimulating the specific acupuncture points along the kidney and bladder meridians can balance this flow so that the organs associated with the Water element can become regulated in their function. When your qi is out of balance, it can cause physical and emotional chaos and imbalances that require treatment.
When Qi flows smoothly and harmoniously through the body’s meridians (energy pathways), it nourishes the organs, tissues, and cells, promoting optimal function and vitality. Imbalances in the Water element can manifest in various ways, including physical symptoms such as lower back pain, urinary issues such as UTIs or frequent urination, reproductive problems, and bone disorders.
Emotionally, the Water element is associated with resilience and resourcefulness. When in balance, it promotes qualities such as the ability to overcome obstacles, positivity, and willpower. However, imbalances in the Water element may lead to feelings of fear, insecurity, and a lack of willpower.
