Treating Shingles With Acupuncture

Please share

Shingles is a remarkably common issue; most of the people we interact with have experienced a shingles outbreak. A cousin left over from an outbreak of childhood chickenpox, shingles can be categorized by an illness akin to a flu or harsh head cold, followed by painful and irritating blisters that resembles a rash spreading along hot spots of the body. Causes of shingles can be stress and a compromised immune system- when you’re overtaxing your body, the immune system gets tired, and shingles can occur when the dormant virus becomes active.

This activation leads to really painful, dry, itchy skin that forms blisters in the form of rashes. Those people for whom the virus doesn’t go dormant again, nerve damage around the rashes can begin to happen, and that’s categorized by a burning sensation that can and- if left untreated- will become chronic.

That’s where acupuncture comes in! At Acupuncture and Holistic Health, we aren’t just concerned with healing the symptoms, but rather eradicating the root cause! Because the root cause of an outbreak of shingles may vary from person to person, traditional acupuncture treatment and Five Element acupuncture treatment for shingles also varies from person to person. We won’t just take a look at the temporary, if chronic, rash; we’ll look at why the rash had reason to form. Our trained acupuncturists will assess your immune system and create a health plan using specific points in the body to re energize and balance your qi.

Qi (pronounced chi) is the life force of your body. It is the source of your energy and health. When your qi and your blood stagnate, there is a level of pain that often becomes unbearable to live with, and can turn chronic. Acupuncture works by stimulating the qi, getting that life force flowing much more smoothly, and by strengthening our immune system. Our immune system helps our qi and vice versa: a weak, sick body has weak, defensive qi. By supporting our immune system, acupuncture can revitalize our qi, leading to a restored body free of chronic pain and irritating rashes.
