Summer is a wonderful time of year. Nature is in full bloom, animals are more active, days are longer, the weather is warmer, school is out, and people are out and about. Fun is in the air!
In Chinese medicine, summer is the season of the Fire Element. Fire is about heat, passion, joy, enthusiasm, activity, and openness. The organs and functions of the Fire Element are Heart, Small Intestines, Three Heater and Heart Protector. The spiritual quality of Fire is unconditional love, which comes from the Heart itself. We describe people as “warm-hearted”, “open-hearted”, “kind-hearted”, and the like. When the Heart is made safe by a strong Heart Protector, the Heart is free to radiate its love, joy, and compassion throughout our body, mind, and spirit. The health, happiness, and quality of all of our relationships come from the vitality of our Fire Element.
Summer is the best time of year to get outdoors, become more active, get more exercise and socialize with friends and loved ones. The greatest source of Fire energy is the sun. Sunshine warms us through and through, and we can feel happier inside as we soak up its radiant energy.
Here in Florida, the heat of summer warms our air and our waters. A fun summer pastime for both adults and children is to spend leisure time near the water, enjoying the warmth of the sun’s rays and the refreshing coolness of the water. Our beaches are the best, and the pool is cool!
Summer urges us to come out of our shells, get out and do things, embrace our vulnerabilities and share ourselves openly with others. It coaxes us to:
- Take risks: “nothing ventured, nothing gained”
- Make new friends
- Seek out new relationships
- Deepen our existing friendships
- Spend quality time with our family
- Travel to our favorite destination, or explore somewhere new on an adventure
- Relax and have more fun!
This summer, make a commitment to go with the flow of Nature and become more active. Let the energy of Fire move you! Get outside and walk in the mornings (when it’s cooler). Doing these things will feed the Fire Element within you and cause you to feel more joyful. Start with small steps and, pretty soon, those small steps add up to bigger steps.
