Summer is around the corner! Get ready for longer days, hotter weather, blooming flowers, wearing shorts or a bathing suit, and having fun in the sun.
In May, nature transitions from spring to summer. This seasonal transition marks the energetic shift from Wood (spring) to Fire (summer). As nature’s energy changes, the energy between these internal Elements needs to make a smooth transition. Spring gives extra energy to the two Wood meridians, Liver and Gall Bladder. As summer begins, this extra energy must move to the four Fire meridians: Heart, Small Intestines, Three Heater, and Heart Protector. The Fire Element is at high tide in summer, and these four meridians will naturally gain a bit of extra strength from the season.
For people whose root-cause element is Wood, spring is the best time to maximize the energy of their primary element. There is still time in early May to give your Wood Element a bigger boost than it can receive at any other time of year. For people whose root-cause element is Fire, the best season to gain maximum energy from their acupuncture treatments is summer.
Summer arrives around mid-May, so Fire meridians are best treated at that time. All Five Elements are inside each of us. The balance of these Elements is unique to each individual, but all Five Elements contribute to some degree to our health. Even if your primary element is not Wood or Fire, it is important to maintain a good balance of these elements within you.
Each element is associated with an emotion. The Fire element corresponds to joy; Earth with sympathy and worry; Metal with grief; Water with fear, and Wood with anger. For Wood, it is healthy to not get angry too easily, just as it is healthy to not be a doormat for others to trample all over you. A healthy degree of assertiveness is a sign of a healthy Wood Element. Mentally, the Liver meridian is in charge of all our plans, and the Gall Bladder meridian is in charge of all of our decisions. Being well organized and decisive are signs of a healthy Wood Element.
Fire relates to the emotion of joy. A sign of healthy Fire energy is when you are able to laugh easily, enjoy the warmth of close relationships with family and loved ones, can socialize and share a sense of community with friends and neighbors, and feel compassion (which comes from the Heart). When you feel an abundance of joy within these relationships, your Fire is strong. If you want or need more joy in your life, summer is the best season to receive an acupuncture treatment for your Fire meridians.
The Heart and Heart Protector are two of the four Fire meridians. Not only is the Heart the source of our compassion, but Heart energy also helps us stay ordered and in control. When we have good Heart energy, we don’t get overwhelmed easily and handle our stress with calmness. Our Heart Protector helps our hearts feel protected and secure against stress or hurts. When our Heart Protector energy is strong, we can be open and loving in our relationships and create greater intimacy with our loved ones.
