Healing Doesn’t Have To Be a Grind! Acupuncture Can Help Your TMJ!

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, and it’s most commonly referred to as the jawbone. It’s the section of your jaw that connects your bottom jawbone to the rest of your skull and is responsible for helping us do things like talk, chew, and open/close our mouth. Disorders that cause pain and inflammation vary, but some common ones include incorrect jaw alignment, cartilage damage, impacted bone healing improperly, and arthritis.
Self care to relieve pain and inflammation can help, including gua sha massage, avoid chewing gum, stretches, and heat/ice to the area, but another form of help can come in the shape of acupuncture!
Acupressure points and acupuncture can help relieve the tightness, inflammation, or pain in the area by stimulating the muscles, tissues, and fascia around the joint to help mitigate some of that build-up and improve blood circulation and flow of qi to the affected areas. Stress is also a big contributing factor- when we’re stressed, we carry a lot of that tension in our face muscles and jaw, especially if clenching those muscles is already something that you do normally. Acupuncture can help relieve that stress so you don’t feel that physical toll as often!
Alongside holistic herbs and treatments for pain relief, anti inflammation, and stress relief, we may gently encourage lifestyle changes to reduce muscle inflammation and overall stress like a diet change, exercise plan, or meditative and mindfulness habits.
If this sounds like an avenue you’d like to explore to relief TMJ discomfort and pain, give us a call at (904) 505-1796 to schedule your consultation today!
